Produced by Richard Hovey, an educator/architectural photographer; and Sylvia Hovey, a travel industry insider, The Artistic Traveler covers exciting developments in architecture around the world. The idea began in the 1980s after they returned from a trip to realize they had missed seeing an important building by one of their favorite architects which wasn’t even mentioned in any of the city guidebooks.

At that time, the concept of traveling to visit architecture as an art was practiced primarily by architects and a few dedicated fans concentrating on a particular architect. Most magazines and books on architecture were (and are) written in a dense, difficult-to-understand form of English we call “architecturese.”

With a keen eye for quality design, the advent of desktop publishing allowed Rich to begin a 12-page, bi-monthly, personal newsletter covering the best in classic and contemporary architecture written in non-technical language for those who enjoy architecture as an art form. In addition to covering the openings of new buildings, “The Log” carries many listings of closures, renovations, and design-arts-related museum exhibitions.

With his photographic experience, having studied at the Art Center College of Design and worked for famous architectural photographer Julius Shulman, Rich also includes a “Photo Class” section while Sylvia helps with a Travel News column. Rounding out the package is the popular “Mystery Picture” challenging readers to identify a noted building from a fragment.

Ten years later, architectural travel is much more popular, as the Bilbao city fathers can attest, and The Artistic Traveler continues to serve a large percentage of the charter subscribers in addition to many new ones in 38 states and three countries. It’s now available in the original black & white version mailed out on paper and in color via an emailed Acrobat PDF file.
